Sheryl Crow urges preservation of wild mustangs

Staff and agencies
02 July, 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sheryl Crow is urging people to get involved in saving America‘s wild horses.

The program airs 9 p.m. EST Monday (July 7th) on the Documentary Channel. Directed by James Kleinert, it‘s narrated by Peter Coyote and features Viggo Mortensen.

"We‘re starting to get really, really far away from our heritage and what this country is based on," she says.

"If any of these politicians visited these sites where our indigenous animals are being slaughtered in an inhumane way and being sold for meat, I feel that there would be a different take and a different approach to what‘s happening," Crow says.

From the link posted by Jennifer above:

Saving the American Wild Horse documents the struggle of an animal that has long symbolized freedom, individualism and unbridled passion; all traits that exemplify what humans strive for in their finest hours.

Thank you very much, Jen and Kal!
I'm not especially a horse girl but I like horses anyway. Especially TJ is a very chaming horse. I know they are called American Paited ponies but for short I call them "Native American Indian ponies".

From DenverPost.com:

Get online, not in line, for Starz-studded DNC party

By Bill Husted
The Denver Post
Article Last Updated: 08/14/2008 11:30:25 PM MDT

Viggo Alert 20080814__20080815_B03_AE15HUSTED~p1_200 Activist Tom Hayden is laid back these days.

More big names are coming to town for the DNC, this time for the Starz Green Room, which is being billed as "a respite from and a complement to" official events. Among the stars who will take part in panel discussions, screenings and more: Daryl Hannah, Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Viggo Mortensen, Josh Brolin, Kal Penn and Hill Harper.

Add to that filmmakers Stuart Townsend, Will.i.am, Patrick Creadon, Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, Chris Moore and Morgan Spurlock. They've also lined up politicians such as Diana DeGette and journalists including Jonathan Alter and Elvis Mitchell.

Starz Entertainment is producing. It will be closed to the public, but they promise anyone can attend virtually at starzgreenroom.com.

Oprah pal Gayle King told "Entertainment Tonight" that she'll be in Denver for the DNC, along with Winfrey. King said she will broadcast her "Oprah and Friends" XM Radio show from here starting Aug. 25.
Tom Hayden has missed only two Democratic National Conventions since 1960. He's gone as a reporter, as a delegate, as a demonstrator.

The well-known '60s radical, once married to Jane Fonda, is of course coming to Denver, this time to talk, to listen and to peddle his new book, "Voices of the Chicago Eight."

Hayden hopes the city calms down and doesn't arrest hundreds of protesters. "Denver's John Elway's city, the Broncos' city," he says. "You know how to handle crowds."

Having attended so many conventions, Hayden sounds pretty laid back about this one. "I'm retired from politics, so when I attend I don't get stirred up, I don't get the buzz, I don't feel quite the excitement I used to. I pay close attention and see a lot of old friends. I find it quite exhausting, whereas years ago I would have fed on it."

Does he feel nostalgic at these events?

"It's not nostalgia; it's a bit disorienting. I may not even stay the whole week. I'd like to see (Sen. Barack) Obama give his speech on television."

The times they are a changin'.

Read Hayden's op-ed piece in Sunday's Denver Post.

Safety first.

Bill Maher brings his new rules to the DNC, compliments of Trojan Condoms and Rolling Stone. The trio will be at the Sherman Event Center on Aug. 25; Maher will perform at 10 p.m. This will be the funniest night at the DNC.

Outside the event, organizers will encourage conventiongoers to take a condom pledge and hold relay races to see which team can correctly put condoms on plastic bananas.

Also coming to the DNC: Vincent Bugliosi with his tome, "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder."

Skedded to talk @ blog headquarters The Big Tent at 1532 Wyn koop St.: Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Phil Donahue, Howard Dean, T. Boone Pickens, Arianna Huffington.
City spirit.

Martha Stewart comes to Denver on Tuesday to celebrate KB Home Stapleton II's first birthday. . . . Sightem: Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones at Jing on Wednesday night. . . . Sez who: "I've always felt that a young man worth his salt is a Democrat until he makes a little money. And if he wants to save that money, he becomes a Republican." Papa Jack Weil

Bill Husted's column appears Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Take a peek at Husted's next column at blogs.denverpost.com/. husted.

From hollywoodreporter.com:

ABBA members to attend Deauville opening

'Mamma Mia!' will launch the festival's 34th edition

By Charles Masters

Sept 4, 2008PARIS -- Former ABBA members turned executive producers Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus will join "Mamma Mia!" director Phyllida Lloyd on Friday for the opening night of the 34th annual Deauville Festival of American Cinema.

The hit musical's French premiere also will be attended by writer Catherine Johnson and producer Judy Craymer, but none of the film's cast will be in the Normandy coastal resort.

Star power at the festival, which runs through Sept. 14, will instead come from the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, due in town with director Neil LaBute for "Lakeview Terrace"; Kevin Spacey, accompanying Jay Roach's HBO election drama "Recount"; and Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris, with "Appaloosa."

Harris will receive one of several tributes during the festival, and Deauville will honor Spike Lee, in town for the French premiere of "Miracle at St. Anna." The festival also will honor Parker Posey and director Charles Burnett.

Other filmmaking talent due in Deauville includes James Toback, Errol Morris, Alan Ball, Bill Plympton and Lance Hammer. And Oscar winner Juliette Binoche is expected to drop in to talk up the romantic comedy "Dan in Real Life," directed by Peter Hedges.

French actress Carole Bouquet will head an international jury that will select a winner from the 11-strong competition lineup of independent American films.

What interesting news! Viggo together with the 2 clever Abba men, Benny Anderson and Björn Ulveus. 3 idols of me at the same place!! Yes, I like the 2 Abba women, too (mostly Frida). It could be funny if they meet each other in Toronto.

Rome Film Festival organizers announce lineup
10/01/2008 | 10:59 PM

ROME - Al Pacino, Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen and Colin Firth are among the film stars who will attend the Rome Film Festival this month, organizers said Wednesday.

The festival, which runs Oct. 22-31 in the Italian capital, will host the world premiere of "8," a UN-backed movie on poverty made of eight segments by directors including Jane Campion and Wim Wenders.

The film, screening out of competition, aims to raise awareness of world poverty. It is inspired by the UN's Millennium Development Goals which were adopted by world leaders in 2000 to cut poverty and disease and improve health care and education for the world's poor by 2015.

But halfway through the deadline, not all countries have met those goals.

The stories focus on Africa, the US, Australia, Iceland, Germany and the Amazon rain forest, organizers said. Gael Garcia Bernal, Gus Van Sant, Mira Nair, Jan Kounen, Abderrahmane Sissako and Gaspar Noe are also among the movie's directors.

The festival will also screen out of competition Saul Dibb's historical pageant "The Duchess," starring Ralph Fiennes and Knightley as the spirited and unconventional Georgiana, duchess of Devonshire, an 18th-century ancestor of Princess Diana. The film is screening out of competition.

Among the 20 movies competing for the Best Movie Award are US police drama "Pride and Glory" by Gavin O'Connor, starring Edward Norton, Colin Farrell and Jon Voight and a French-Cambodian film, "Un Barrage contre le Pacifique" (The Sea Wall), a screen adaptation of the novel by Marguerite Duras, starring Isabelle Huppert.

Also competing is "Easy Virtue," a 1920s period comedy with Ben Barnes as a young man who shocks his upper-crust English family by bringing home his American bride, played by Jessica Biel. Colin Firth and Kristin Scott Thomas also star in the movie.

Al Pacino is expected to come to pick up an acting award and take part in public meetings and conferences, organizers said. Director David Cronenberg will also attend.

The festival — mainly held at the city's Auditorium, an exhibition and concert center designed by architect Renzo Piano — also features a section dedicated to movies for or about children and teenagers. - AP
