| From Hello Magazine: 27 OCTOBER 2008 With two films to introduce at this year's Rome Film Festival Viggo Mortensen was firmly in the spotlight. The Oscar nominee was first called on to unveil his new Western, Appaloosa, in which he appears with former A History Of Violence co-star Ed Harris. Viggo says making the film - a tale of two friends hired to police a small town suffering under the rule of a rancher - was an extremely enjoyable experience. "Ed and I would joke about it sometimes when we’d be on our horses out in these beautiful landscapes, saying: 'Boy, this is amazing. We’re getting paid to do this thing we used to play at when we were little'," he reveals. A day later the handsome New Yorker turned out for the premiere of Nazi Germany-set drama Good. Viggo chose the occasion to pledge his support for presidential hopeful Barack Obama, by holding a sign urging Europeans to support the Democratic Party leader. Other stars in town to launch their new big screen offerings included American Beauty actress Meena Suvari and former Bond girl Caterina Murino. The glamorous duo star in The Garden Of Eden, which follows Meena's character on a trip across post-WWI Italy with her new husband | |

| From adnkronos.com:
Rome Film Festival: US actor likens leaders to Nazi regime
Rome, 26 Oct. (AKI) - Acclaimed American actor Viggo Mortensen has likened Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi and US President George W. Bush to the leaders of Nazi Germany, accusing them of exploiting fear and paranoia to strengthen their power.
Mortensen was speaking on Sunday at the third annual Rome Film Festival where he was launching a British-Hungarian film entitled, 'Good'.
The film focuses on the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s in Germany. Mortensen plays a literature professor whose mother suffers from dementia. His career takes off after he advocates compassionate euthanasia and he is drawn towards Nazism.
Mortensen said German Nazism, like the dictators of Brazil and Argentina, eight years of Bush in America and Berlusconi's leadership in Italy, all reflected power without any restrictions and exploit fear and paranoia.
In the film, directed by Vicente Amorim, Mortensen's character at one point wears the uniform of the notorious paramilitary SS guards, many of whom were accused and prosecuted of crimes against humanity after World War II.
Mortensen said when he wore the uniform for the first time he felt a "strange sensation" and he thought it was due to the heat in Budapest, where the film was shot.
But he said he realised it was his reaction to the significance of the uniform and he sought to portray his character without judging him.
Mortensen said 'Good' was not a film about Hitler, but a family story.
Mortensen, an Academy Award-nominated actor and poet, is perhaps best known for his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
He is appearing in 'Appaloosa', an American film screened at the festival. It focuses on the friendship of two men hired to protect a small town from a ruthless rancher, a classic western story set in 1882.
More than 150 films are featured at the festival which ends on 31 October. | |

| The Appaloosa actor does Rome decked out in a ghostly-hued suit. Hope he doesn't spill any vino on it. Posted on 10/28/2008 4:39 PM by Celebuzz Hmmm. Viggo Mortensen's next major role is in an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel The Road. Viggo plays a character named, simply, The Man. Celeb Buzz has Viggo looking frightening in white. And now here he is, leaving Rome's Hotel De Russie en route to the airport, decked out in—get this—a white suit. Hmm. The Road is a book about a radiation-scrambled dude trekking through a nuclear winter. He is constantly coughing up spurts of blood into a cloth he wears over his mouth. The Man's primary goal is to keep his kid from being captured and eaten by marauding gangs of human cannibals. Is the consummate actor and good autographer trying to tell us something with his white jacket and slacks? Like, for instance, "Man, after being down The Road, all I want is a clean suit of clothes and a comfortable car to sit down in." If the movie is anything like the book, there's a reason why Mortensen's eyes seem to have a haunted, jumpy look. | |
